The only one in Rivne region: Dubno has opened a kindergarten thermally refurbished in compliance with the EU standards

More than 100 children in Dubno will enter the autumn-winter season in more comfortable temperature conditions and in adequately ventilated premises, and the town authorities will get lower bills for the consumed heat energy. These are the first results of the energy-efficient project ‘Warm schools and kindergartens – a guarantee of children health: a comprehensive project on raising energy savings in the educational institutions of the town of Dubno’, which has been implemented by the town thanks to the support provided by the European Union.

On December 18 the opening ceremony took place in the thermally refurbished kindergarten No. 4. The following people participated in the event: Dubno town mayor Vasyl Antoniuk, key expert, support team leader Jan Waanders, key expert Maksym Vereshchak, Deputy Head of the Rivne Regional Administration Serhiy Hemberg, First Deputy Head of the Rivne Regional Council Serhiy Svystalyuk, Head of the Department of Education and Science of the Rivne Regional State Administration Petro Korzhevsky.

This is the first out of the four institutions refurbished by the town within the project. Besides that, this is the only kindergarten in Rivne region that has undergone comprehensive refurbishment following the EU standards.

Kindergarten No. 4 was erected in 1961. In the 80ies bedrooms were additionally built to the available building. After 40 years of operation, the premises already required a comprehensive approach to refurbishment, however, due to town budget limitations, everything could be done only thanks to Dubno’s involvement in the Covenant of Mayors initiative. The town got a chance to supply a grant application and to get co-funding for the refurbishment of not one, but four buildings – two general education schools and two kindergartens. According to the terms, the grant covers up to 80% of the costs.

For the building of kindergarten No. 4 thermal refurbishment turned out to be very timely. During the building examination, experts found a damaged basement and damaged cover between the second floor and the attic. Within the project, parts of the basement, walls, and attic cover were reinforced in the building, a new heating system was installed, all window and door entry blocks were replaced, the roof and metal tile roof were put in place. Mineral wool slabs were used to insulate outer walls and attic cover, and foam glass was used to insulate the plinth part of the premises. And also a new inflow-exhaust ventilation system with heat exchange was installed in the kindergarten.

Thermal refurbishment of the kindergarten stands not just for improved comfort rate for children and nursery teachers, but also savings of heat and electric power. According to preliminary estimations, annual energy consumption in the kindergarten will go 51 % down. In the monetary equivalent that means the savings amounting to 256,500 UAH a year.
