Street lighting refurbishment in Chernivtsi completed

Over one hundred thousand residents of Chernivtsi feel more comfortable and safe in the well-lit city streets in the nighttime, while the city authorities get lower electricity consumption bills. These are the first outcomes of the energy-efficiency project ‘Sustainable Energy Action Plan for Local Social-Economic Development: Practical Implementation of the Sustainable Energy Action Plan towards Sustainable, Smart and Energy-Efficiency City Lighting in the City of Chernivtsi’, implemented by the city with the financial support of the European Union.

In 2017, thanks to the involvement of Chernivtsi in the Covenant of Mayors initiative, the city got an opportunity to submit a grant application and to get co-funding for street lighting refurbishment. The total project cost is 1,542,024 EUR. According to the terms, the grant provided by the European Union covered 80% of the cost (1,217,891 EUR).

Over three years of the project implementation, one-third of the city’s street lighting network has been refurbished. Almost four thousand street lamps have been replaced with energy-efficient LED lamps as well as 88 km of electricity grids and 32 street electric equipment cabinets have been refurbished. A monitoring system has been developed for new lamps: new management cabinets will secure automatic switching on/switching off of lamps and the data on electricity accounting as well as information about possible failures will be sent automatically. In the nighttime lamps will work at lower capacity – that will enable to save even more electricity.

Besides that, in three city districts 16 solar panels have been installed, as well as 3 pedestrian crossings have been lit.

Street lighting refurbishment is not just about improving the comfort of the city residents, but about electricity savings. According to preliminary estimates, energy consumption as compared to the basic line will go down by 1,485 MWh, or by 62%. In the financial equivalent, the actual annual savings will amount to 84,100 EUR.

Besides that, the introduction of the LED street lighting will enable to reduce of carbon dioxide emission in Chernivtsi by more than 506 tons, – which is the annul amount of emission produced by 324 new cars.
