Street lighting refurbishment in Bereza completed

Over 64,000 residents of the town of Bereza feel more comfortable and safer in the well-lit streets of the town in the night time, while the town authorities get lower utility bills for electricity consumption. These are the first results of the energy-efficient project ‘Implementation of LED-Based Street Lighting in Bereza Raion Using Automation and Control Systems’, implemented by the town thanks to the European Union.

The solemn project completion ceremony took place on February 5.

In 2017, thanks to Bereza’s participation in the Covenant of Mayors initiative, the town got an opportunity to apply for a grant and to get co-funding for street lighting refurbishment in Bereza Raion using automation and control systems. The overall cost of the project is 775,044 Euros. According to the terms, the European Union’s grant covered 80% of the cost (620,000 Euros).

Over 2 years of the project implementation 2,685 lamps were replaced in the town with new efficient LED lamps. Also, the system of public lighting management – the smart grid allowing to provide for the necessary amount of light where and when it is necessary – has been implemented.

Street lighting refurbishment is not just about improving residents’ comfort, but about electricity savings as well. According to preliminary estimates, annual energy consumption will go down by 44 %. In the monetary equivalent that stands for the savings amounting to 313 thousand roubles annually. Moreover, LED street lighting installation will enable to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by more than 724 tons – which is the annual amount of emissions produced by 464 new cars
