Thanks to the support of the European Union, Cantemir becomes one of the first cities in the Republic of Moldova which will manage street lighting with the help of intelligent and energy efficient technologies. This has become possible thanks to the EU-funded Project: Green Light Moldova. Modernization and Saving Energy in Street Lighting implemented in Cantemir and Ocnita by the Alliance for Energy Efficiency and Renewables (AEER) in collaboration with the local public authorities within the framework of the “Covenant of Mayors Demonstration Projects” Program.
The newly installed system now allows the street lighting operators to control and monitor the work of street lights remotely through the GSM mobile networks without leaving the work place and saving time on resolving the emergency situations. By pushing a few buttons it is possible to change the schedule and the level of lighting intensity where and when desired, depending on the time and utilization of the street. Such smart technology in combination with energy efficient LED lights will allow saving up to 80% of electricity compared to the baseline situation, with excellent quality of lights and save several ten thousands of lei each year.

The works on modernization of the street lighting system in Cantemir were carried out over 27 streets for an overall length of 11,2 km. A total of 419 old inefficient lamps have been replaced with smart and energy efficient LED lights, with a lifetime of 13 years. Smart LEDs will help reducing CO2 emissions by 98t/year, which is the equivalent of 4451 planted trees and contribute in achieving the City’s climate target. “The reduced electricity bills will not only help the environment, but also improve our public services. This is good for the municipal budget as it frees up funds for new investments, such as in education or for social projects” – said Roman Ciubaciuc the Mayor of Cantemir.
“This is a success story, which demonstrates once again the concrete and tangible benefits brought to the Moldovan citizensthanks to the support of the EU” – underlined Gintautas Baranauskas, Deputy Head of Operations at the EU Delegation to the Republic of Moldova.
The modernization of street lighting system is one of the projects within the ambitious Energy/Climate Action Plan that Cantemir (5000 inhabitants) is realizing as part of its commitment under the EU Initiative “Covenant of Mayors”. Cantemir has been a signatory to the Covenant of Mayors since 2012.
The total cost of the project in Cantemir is 250000 Euro, 80% of which (200000 €) is the grant of the European Union, 30000 Euro the contribution of the city of Cantemir and 20000 Euro donated by the Energy Efficiency Fund.
